Latest HMRC statistics on R&D tax relief

Latest HMRC statistics on R&D tax relief suggest a new era of scrutiny but stronger outcomes for genuine innovators.

Published in September 2025, the statistics confirm what many in the innovation community have felt over the past year - the landscape for claiming R&D tax relief has fundamentally changed:

  • Total claims down 26%
  • SME claims down 31%
  • New compliance rules and documentation requirements are changing the landscape

Sam Swansborough, Business Tax Director at James Cowper Kreston, commented: “The regime is evolving to better target genuine innovation. Forward-thinking businesses are using this as an opportunity to strengthen their processes, demonstrate the real impact of their R&D, and maximise claim value.”

Q3 2025 Quarterly Economic Survey Report

The Q3 2025 Quarterly Economic Survey reveals that confidence remains strong among regional businesses, with around 80% expecting turnover growth and over 60% anticipating improved profitability, supported by a rise in UK and overseas sales. However, challenges persist: 67% of firms are operating below full capacity, and cost pressures (particularly from labour, taxation, and raw materials) remain significant.

While recruitment difficulties continue to affect many employers, the region’s resilient performance and growing export activity suggest that the Thames Valley economy is well positioned for recovery if cost and capacity constraints can be addressed.

VAT and temporary movement of horses in and out of the UK

The temporary movement of horses across UK borders, whether for racing, breeding, training, or competition, requires careful navigation of VAT and customs rules, particularly post-Brexit.

Temporary Admission Relief

Horses temporarily imported into the UK may qualify for Temporary Admission (TA), a customs procedure that provides full relief from import VAT and customs duties, provided the horse is re-exported within a set timeframe (usually within 2 years). This is particularly relevant for horses entering the UK for short-term events or training.
